Reset your nervous system with presence and awareness
Befriend Your Nervous System gathers my learning over several years about mind-body practices that promote healthy functioning of the nervous system.
Learn about your nervous system and experience a variety of mind-body practices that you can apply immediately in your daily life.
We will explore effective ways to use gentle movement, breath work, and mindful awareness to promote health and well-being. You will learn how to recognize what your nervous system needs and 'retune' it with more energy or more calm. In keeping with my trauma-sensitive approach, the practices I offer are simple and adaptable to individual needs. Each session will provide an opportunity for social connection.
We live in a time of unprecendented stress and uncertainty.
More people than ever are experiencing compromised mental and physical health, relationships, and quality of life due to prolonged stress. Our response to stress and the impacts of it, are governed by the nervous system. It's designed to protect us in times of danger, but too often it is stuck in a state of high alert, which can lead to harmful effects on our body, mind and well-being. A large number of health problems can be caused or worsened by the impact of stress on the nervous system. Some common examples include anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue.
Many activities that are promoted as stress-reducing have only a temporary effect.
For long-lasting, sustainable stress reduction, we need to understand how our nervous system works, recognize when it's getting overactivated, and have strategies to restore its balance. Sometimes we need more energy in the system and other times we need more calm. The nervous system (which includes the brain) is capable of extraordinary change! With knowledge and tools to understand and respond to your nervous system's signals, you can gain more control over how you feel; mentally, emotionally and physically.
I invite you to consider an important question: if your thinking, mood, energy, and symptoms got better, what could your life be like?
My approach combines the ancient wisdom of practices like yoga and meditation with modern science. I draw from a range of modalities and trauma-informed teachers, including psychologists Arielle Schwartz, Peter Levine, Liz Stanley, David Treleaven and others. Research is flourishing in the field of mind-body medicine. It takes about 17 years for research findings to be translated into clinical practice. I’m not willing to wait that long when it comes to my health! Are you?
